"i've been rated nothing but 10s and my rating still won't move 1 point"
for starters, if you haven't figured it out, your "rating" is an average of all your individual ratings.
if you don't know how to average, well... you shouldn't focused on payin' attention in 3rd grade.
now that we got that outta the way.. here's why... i'll try and explain in basic 2nd grade language (since you weren't payin' attention in 3rd grade) so you'll understand.
your rating is rounded to the nearest hundreth. so if your rating is 9.76, the "hundreth" is the number two places after the decimal point, which would be 6. you only see 9.76, when in reality your rating is 9.766958189509869. now if that long ass decimal was posted everywhere, i'd be quite annoying, so that's the reason for rounding your rating to the nearest hundreth. now.. let's say your current rating is 9.767951.. and someone rates you a 10.. then your AVERAGE rating becomes: 9.768545. both of those decimals 9.767951 and 9.768545 rounded to the nearest hundreth would still be 9.76. another reason for not seeing "increase in points" is because you've probably been rated so many times. if you've been rated 500 times and your rating is a 9.76.. the next 10 you recieve is going to move your rating LESS than if you've been rated 50 times.
"howcome my rating loses more points when someone rates me a 1, but doesn't move when someone rates me a 10"
because the difference from your current rating which is probably 9.76 to 10 is a lot LESS than it is from 9.76 to 1
examples on averaging:
let's say you've been rated 6 times.. and the following are what you've been rated:
10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 1.
to average numbers together, you add them all together, then divide by how many numbers you added together.
10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 1 = 51
51 / 6 = 8.5
in english, 51 divided by 6 (the amount of times you've been rated) equals 8.5.
so your average rating is 8.5, which is what is displayed on your page.
now let's look what happens when you have a few more 10s.
10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 1 = 81
you've been rated 9 times. everytime you've gotten a 10, except for the one time a hater gave you a 1.
81 / 9 = 9
so your rating is a 9. which is higher than an 8.5.. because you've been rated more 10s.
now if someone comes along and rates you another 10. your rating will be 9.1 (91 / 10 = 9.1)
now let's say your rating is a 9. but you've been rated 583 times. and then someone comes along and rates you a 10. this is what happens.
9 x 583 = 5247 (this number is all your previous ratings added together)
5247 + 10 = 5257 (after you've been rated a 10, this is now your total of all ratings added together)
583 + 1 = 584 (after you've been rated a 10, this is your total times you have been rated)
5248 / 584 = 9.0017123287671232876712328767123
rounded to the nearest hundreth = 9.00, which is 9.
another 10, and your rating is: 9.0034188034188034188034188034188
round that off again, and it's still a 9.00, which is 9. you get the point.. i hope
